Jewelry - Earrings for Beginners 5.16.18

Calendar May 16, 2018 at 6 pm, runs for 3 weeks

Cutting, stamping, doming, soldering and wire wrapping are some of the basic jewelry-making and silversmithing techniques you will learn in this class. Fabricate your own ear wires for three pair of earrings: a gemstone dangle teardrop, a hammered disc and a pair of lentil dangle earrings. You will learn the skills to craft your own jewelry confidently at home and have three sets of earrings to keep as your own or gift to someone special. Registration $40, plus materials fee of $50, payable to the instructor on the first night. 3 weeks 6:00-8:30 p.m. Begins Wed 5/16 CHRHS 2D Art Karyl Brown is a silversmith and illustrator who evolved from beading and cold connected jewelry into metal working after taking a similar soldering class which vanquished her fear of fire and of soldering and opened up a new creative world.

Knitting for Beginners

Anyone can knit! This class will cover everything you need to know to make your choice of beginner projects: a scarf, hat, cowl, or wrist warmers. The instructor will cover casting on, knit and purl stitches, increasing and decreasing and provide tips and support for making a wonderful woolen wearable that you'll be proud to own. Materials lists for each project will be available at The Cashmere Goat in Camden or from the instructor at the first meeting. Please bring a pair of knitting needles size 6, 7, or 8 and some worsted weight yarn, preferably a light color. These items will also be available for purchase from the instructor. Mention this class at The Cashmere Goat to receive a discount on materials. Have you always wanted to make socks? Have you dabbled in sock knitting but just can’t seem to get the hang of it? Or, are you an experienced sock knitter looking to improve your skills? In three weeks of tutorials we’ll break down sock construction from heel to toe, compare different methods, discuss patterns, yarns, books and resources to provide you with what you need to explore the rich world of sock knitting. Prerequisites: You must already know how to knit, purl, increase, decrease, cast on, and bind off. Experience knitting in the round is helpful. Double pointed or circular needles are both suitable. Materials: 100g sock weight yarn such as Berroco Sox; 4 or 5 double pointed knitting needles size 0, 1, or 2; darning needle, scissors, tape measure, stitch markers if you have them. Oil Painting for Beginners to Intermediate

Always a popular class! This semester's theme is: "A Study of the Masters from Impressionism to Abstract". Seeing the same image from two different angles brings to light its many facets, you will discover how to focus the attention of the observer. This is a fun group that will get you painting at least one night per week. Class is open to all levels of skill, but you must have had some painting experience. Ornamental Welding

This is an introduction to three types of welding equipment. We will cover safety, welder operation, fabrication and bending techniques, while showing you how to create garden and lawn ornaments. This class is NOT designed for anyone hoping to obtain work in the welding world. It IS designed to help those who would like to be able to do minor welding in their own garages. Sign up early as class size is limited to 6. Registration $80 includes materials. 5 weeks 5:30-8:00 p.m. Begins Mon 3/12 CHRHS Metal Shop Wayne Twitchell is a retired welding instructor from Bath Iron Works and has been welding for over 40 years. Wayne is a recipient of the Navy’s Aegis Excellence Award for welding. He has taught welding through adult ed programs for 10 years and in his spare time enjoys making scrap metal sculptures.

Pottery - Advanced Wheel: Making Large Stacked Vessels

In this one-session class you will learn how to make larger pieces on the wheel, combining pieces together and experimenting with surface techniques that make the work your own. This class is for people who already know how to throw on a potter's wheel and are ready for the next level. In this hands-on class, the instructor will show you how to make taller vessels by combining two or more pieces together and demonstrate interesting options for surface treatment of the wet clay.
