Paddle 1.5 miles by sea kayak after an orientation and safety briefing with Master Maine Guide, Alice in her provided kayaks. Learn about the late Civil War mixed-race community and their eviction in 1912 by the state of Maine. Learn the prehistory of the island and its current use by walking the trails on the island stopping to learn about the different sites on the island. No buildings remain. You'll have a chance to eat the snacks/lunch that you brought at the southern end of the island. Afterwards we'll paddle back to our start. You must be able to walk unaided on uneven trails. Five hour trip meets at 8:15am in Cundy's Harbor (parking is about 1/2 mile away) and returns about 1:15pm. Weather conditions unsafe for paddling will cancel the trip.

The class will be divided into two groups, one group will start the day working on a sewing machine while the second group will work on hand-sewing projects. After a break the two groups will switch. In machine sewing you will learn how to make a small envelope pillow with inserts, how to personalize slippers, make a key fob, and possibly also a small pouch with elastic closure. Along the way you will also learn safety and sewing basics such as how to use and care for the machine, measuring and cutting fabric, and sewing tools. In hand sewing you will learn how to sew on a button, use fabric paint, and learn the whipstitch and ladder stitch. If there is time and interest, the group may make a small hand-sewn teddy bear. Speed-control sewing machines will be supplied to make machine time easy and stress-free. Class is suitable for ages 10-13.

In this course, we will weave a 17” tall basket with premium reed. We will go over the history of pack baskets and what materials have been used. The instructor will go through the process of making the basket step-by-step ensuring all will walk away with a finished basket. The baskets will have a base and feet along with pack straps. We will bring a variety of color straps and even color reeds to add a little color to your basket.

Here is a basket that you can take to the market to grab your fresh produce and bakery items. Everyone is welcome to join this class. If you have never weaved before I will be doing step by step directions. You will walk away with a finished basket.

This basket will have two straps that can be worn on the shoulder or carried. Multiple color options on strap. The material of the basket is flat and half round quality reed. We will also add color reed in the basket if desired from blue, purple, red, green, and brown.
