Japanese Haiku

$45

with Kristen Lindquist

Calendar Jan 15, 2020 at 6 pm, runs for 4 weeks

The centuries-old Japanese haiku has become one of the most universally popular poetic forms, in part because of its simplicity of form -- three, unrhymed lines totaling 17 syllables. You might think any first-grader could write a haiku, but there's a lot more going on than just counting syllables! In this introductory workshop, we will look at the long tradition of haiku as nature poem. Over the four evenings, we will explore the history of the form, read classic Japanese haiku in translation, and practice techniques for writing and sharing our own short poems.
