Movies: How Some Famous Filmmakers Got Their Start with Low- or No-Budget Movies

For movie buffs, and the just curious, this is an informational course on the demanding, chaotic, and often epic world of low budget filmmaking in New York City in the 1980's and 1990's. These movies were known for their innovative storytelling, unique visual styles, and often featured unknown actors, reflecting the vibrant independent film scene of the time. Filmmakers featured include Christopher Nolan, Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch, David O. Russell, John Sayles, Luc Besson, Whit Stillman, Richard Linklater, Darren Aronofsky, Charlie Kaufman, Noah Baumbach, and more. Highlights of films will be shown in class with a possible option of access to full movies with links to streaming services for students to stream and view at home. Class skips 11/27.
